Instructor name TAKANO TOSHIYUKI (Graduate School of Agriculture Professor)
Outline and Purpose of the Course Basic knowledge of organic chemistry is important to understanding the chemical structure and reactivity of the chemical components of wood. In this lecture, we will explain the fundamentals of organic chemistry (especially the organic electronic theory of organic chemistry) and also, in related items, the chemical reactions of wood components (cellulose, lignin, and the like).
Course Goals Being able to understand the organic reaction mechanism diagram from the organic chemistry textbook (reaction mechanism diagram showing the movement of electrons with arrows).
Schedule and Contents In this lecture, we will study and do exercises on the following items.
1: Chemical bonding and molecular structures
2: How to express organic reactions (1) (how to write resonance structures)
3: How to express organic reactions (2) (how to write ion reactions)
4: How to express organic reactions (3) (how to write radical reactions)
5: Acids and bases
6: Nucleophilic substitution and elimination reactions (1)
7: Nucleophilic substitution and elimination reactions (2)
8: Cellulose reactions (1)
9: Cellulose reactions (2)
10: Addition reactions and addition-desorption types of substitution reactions
11: The reaction of lignin (1)
12: The reaction of lignin (2)
13: The reaction between enol and enolate
14: The reaction of cellulose (3)
(Report test)
15: Feedback
During the feedback session, we will respond to direct questions from students in the classroom.
Evaluation Methods and Policy [Evaluation method]
Evaluation of points for participation in class (small reports and presentations of the exercises in class will be taken into consideration) (about 80%) and the results of the report test (about 20%).
[Evaluation criteria]
The evaluation criteria and level of achievement will be based on the “Evaluation Criteria and Level of Achievement” section in the student handbook of the Faculty of Agriculture for the relevant year.
Course Requirements None
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Reviewing the exercises from the distributed prints that were not completed during class.
Preparing and reviewing with the organic chemistry textbooks at hand.
Textbooks Textbooks/References Prints of lectures and exercises will be distributed as needed.
