Outline and Purpose of the Course Students will come to understand green space in cities and satoyama. Lectures will be given on legislation on green space, as well as on the planning process and management method. Students are to learn about methods to conserve or use green space depending on local characteristics such as natural conditions and culture and history; this will involve some practical work. Students will develop an understanding of the contemporary meaning of green space planning.
Course Goals To learn methods of planning and managing green space according to local characteristics, such as national conditions, culture, and history.

3. The current situation of green space in Kyoto (Yoshidayama)
4. Legislation on green space
5. The ecological network in green space
6. The current situation of green space in Kyoto (around Kamogawa River)

8. Nature parks and biodiversity
9. The current situation of green space in Kyoto (Kyoto Gyoen)
10. Nature and culture in satoyama/satoumi
11. Green space planning in satoyama
12. Management of green space in satoyama

15. Conclusion

Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students are encouraged to enhance their learning by visiting a nearby park or satoyama following the lectures to understand the current situation of green space. You are also encouraged to read the relevant literature and talk to those who are involved.
