Outline and Purpose of the Course Cellulose is the most abundant natural polymer on Earth, and establishment of its effective use method is an important issue from the viewpoint of promoting the utilization of biomass. Cellulose is also a major component of wood. In this lecture, cellulose will be described in detail, including its chemical structure, physical/chemical properties, macromolecular properties, and usage.
Course Goals Acquiring the basic knowledge to explore the use of cellulose by learning broadly from fundamental matters on cellulose to applied examples. Learning about cellulose from chemical components in the ecology of plants.
Schedule and Contents The following items will be covered in this lecture:
1: Cellulose chemistry learned in high school
Reviewing matters related to cellulose learned from high school chemistry textbooks.
2: Fundamentals of sugar chemistry
Explaining the fundamental matters of sugar chemistry which are essential for understanding the chemical structure of cellulose (how to write structural formulas, terms of sugar chemistry, etc.)
3: Structure of cellulose (1) (chemical structure)
4: Structure of cellulose (2) (crystal structure)
5: Biosynthesis of cellulose
6: Polymer properties of cellulose
7: Physical properties of cellulose (1) (hygroscopicity / swelling)
8: Physical properties of cellulose (2) (dissolution)
9: Chemical properties of cellulose (1) (types of functional groups and reaction outlines)
10: Chemical properties of cellulose (2) (esterification, etherification, oxidation reaction)
11: Chemical properties of cellulose (3) (reaction with acid, reaction with alkali)
12: Utilization of cellulose (1) (utilization as cellulose)
13: Utilization of cellulose (2) (utilization as cellulose derivative)
14: Utilization of cellulose (3) (utilization as paper and fiber)

The feedback session will be in the classroom, and we will comment on the answers of the regular test and answer questions directly received from students.
Evaluation Methods and Policy [Evaluation method]
Grading is based on the evaluation of points for participation in class (including answering the quizzes) (about 20%) and the results of the regular test (about 80%).
