Outline and Purpose of the Course Students will learn the social relevance of sustainable forestry management and learn about the use of forest produce as well as methods to grow forest and harvest it based on the forest ecosystem's characteristics. They will also learn methods to renew forest in light of today's challenges and the future direction. Students will learn the basics of sustainable forestry management for the future through the lectures.
Course Goals To understand the characteristics of forest ecosystems and the forest ecosystem services that derive from them, and to provide a logical explanation for how to manage forest sustainably based on the former.
Schedule and Contents Characteristics of the forest ecosystem and forest development (2 lectures; Ishihara)
Describes methods for selecting trees, renewal and thinning in artificial forest, and their significance and problems based on ecological knowledge.

Characteristics of the forest ecosystem and forest development (6 lectures; Tokuchi)
Describes the forest ecosystem in Japan and how artificial forest, covering a quarter of the national land area, was established and has been managed. Discusses future policies from an ecological point of view.

The history and future of the use of forest resources (6 lectures; Hasegawa)
Provides an overview of the history and current state of forest management and resource use in Japan, and discusses the direction of sustainable forest management and use in the future. Discusses precision forestry in which precise forest information, such as LiDAR and GNSS, is used to manage forests in accordance with its local conditions in reference to its concept, research trends, and how it has been applied.

・Lecturers' e-mail addresses will be circulated during class, and students can ask questions at any time.
・During the feedback period (1 week), teaching staff will make themselves available in their offices.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Assessment is based on the marks earned for the mini tests given in each class and several reports.
Mini tests: 90%; reports and class participation: 10%
Assessment criteria and policy are drawn from "Assessment criteria and policy" in the current version of the Faculty of Agriculture Student Handbook.
