Outline and Purpose of the Course Human beings have interfered with nature, engaging in deterioration for their own convenience. In the past, over logging resulted in widespread deforestation and, more recently, large-scale land development has produced vast bare slopes. Landscape engineering has developed as an academic discipline as well as a system of technology that is necessary to bring about positive environmental change while preserving biodiversity.
In this course, students learn about theories and technology related to the planning, design, implementation, and management of greening.
Course Goals ・To acquire the basic knowledge necessary to practice and research greening.
Schedule and Contents Lectures will be given on the following topics.
The number of lectures per topic is determined by the degree of understanding among students.
The order of topics/sub-topics is not fixed, and each lecturer will make appropriate arrangements depending on their students' background and degree of understanding.

Lectures 1-3: Basics in landscaping engineering
・ The aim and history of greening
  ・ The properties of soil
・ The development of a planting base
  ・ Greening methods
  ・ Greening material
Lectures 4-6: Greening of the slope
  ・ Man-made slope greening
・ Forest conservation and erosion control
Lectures 7-9: Forest restoration
・ The establishment of a environmental forest
  ・ Natural recovery and re-vegetation
Lectures 10-12: Greening of an exceptional environment
  ・ Urban greening
  ・ Rooftop greening

  ・ Tree diagnosis
・ Healing capacity of green space (forest therapy and gardening therapy)
Lecture 15: Feedback
Evaluation Methods and Policy 【Assessment method】
Assessment is based on attitude (40%) and the end-of-semester reports (two reports, each carrying 30%).
【Assessment criteria】
Assessment criteria and policy are drawn from "Assessment criteria and policy" in the current version of the Faculty of Agriculture Student Handbook.
Course Requirements None
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students are encouraged to deepen their understanding of the lecture content by reading about landscape engineering and observing greening projects.
