Outline and Purpose of the Course A planning system is required in order to manage forest and use it sustainably. The course describes the development of the forestry planning system and its problems.
Course Goals To acquire knowledge about forest resource policies and forestry planning administration in Japan. To acquire knowledge about how conditions surrounding forest resources have changed over a long period of time.
Schedule and Contents Lectures will be given as listed below. However, depending on progress and to secure time for questions and answers, the order and/or frequency of a topic could be changed.

Lecture 4: Forest legislation (1)
Lecture 5: Forest legislation (2)
Lecture 6: Forest legislation (3)
Lecture 7: Changes in the forestry planning system (1) (up to the passing of the Forestry Basic Act of 1964)
Lecture 8: Changes in the forestry planning system (2) (Since the passing of the Forestry Basic Act of 1964)
Lecture 9: Recent developments in the forestry planning system (1) (1987 Amendment of Basic Plan of Forest Resource)
Lecture 10: Recent developments in the forestry planning system (2) (1991 Amendment of Forest Act)
Lecture 11: Recent developments in the forestry planning system (3) (1996 Amendment of Basic Plan of Forest Resource)
Lecture 12: Recent developments in the forestry planning system (4) (Act on Forestry Management of 2018)
Lecture 13: Challenges to the system (1) (the framework of the planning system and forest/forestry statistics)
Lecture 14: Challenges to the system (2) (forest owners and forest boundaries)

Evaluation Methods and Policy Assessment is based on the reports (3 in total, worth 75 points) and attitude (including mini report marks, worth 25 points).
Assessment criteria and policy are drawn from "Assessment criteria and policy" in the current version of the Faculty of Agriculture Student Handbook.
