Outline and Purpose of the Course The course consists of lectures, seminars, and practical work on research methods for agricultural management, community agriculture, and rural areas. We identify research themes, subjects, and questions related to aspects such as farmers, agricultural legal persons, and other community agricultural/rural organizations through lectures and seminars, and based on this, we conduct fieldwork on site, which requires an overnight stay.
Course Goals To develop the research skills to interview farmers and those in community institutions about the measures they are taking regarding agricultural management. Additionally, to ascertain the reality of community management and the problems farmers and community agriculture/rural society face, as well as their views on them. Furthermore, to develop analytical and problem-solving skills by analyzing the problem and drafting solutions based on collected data and collaboration with other students.
Schedule and Contents Lectures 1-6
In-class lectures and seminars on methods of management and social research
Students are to identify the research question, subject, and method by engaging with these lectures and seminars.

Lectures 4-14
Fieldwork is conducted while staying in the field.

Evaluation Methods and Policy In principle, those who cannot participate in fieldwork cannot be given credits. This year, the fieldwork is planned from Monday August 2, 2021 to Wednesday August 4, 2021 in Kameoka-shi, Kyoto Prefecture.
Transport to the fieldwork site is provided by the university, but students are responsible for transport and subsistence at the site.
Assessment is based on attitude (70 points) and reports on fieldwork findings (30 points).
Assessment criteria and policy are drawn from "Assessment criteria and policy" in the current version of the Faculty of Agriculture Student Handbook.
Course Requirements This course is for third year Food and Environmental Economics students. Given that we plan to visit the rural area, as well as related organizations and fields, be sure to buy a student educational/research injury policy before participating in the fieldwork.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students are expected to drive group discussions on the research theme, question, and method, using the provided material. During the fieldwork, stay alert, and exchange views with group members to deepen your insight. After the fieldwork, promptly write up the fieldwork report.
