Outline and Purpose of the Course | As population growth and economic development progress, environmental and resource issues are attracting more attention than ever. However, at the same time, globalization of the economy has increased international competition. In this course, we will consider the stable supply of agricultural products, environmental protection, and international competition to study the theories of agricultural resources and environmental issues and provide an overview of resource and environmental issues and conservation policies in developed and developing countries. | |||
Course Goals |
To understand the basic characteristics of agriculture and regional resources, the basic concepts related to the external economic effects of agriculture and market failure, sustainable agricultural development, and their interrelationships. To understand the characteristics of Japanese agriculture and agricultural policies and their new trends through comparisons with representative countries and regions in the world, within the framework of international agriculture. To acquire economic perspectives and analytical methods when studying issues such as sustainable development of regional agriculture and utilization and conservation of local resources. |

Schedule and Contents |
Lectures will cover the following topics, with 1-2 lectures per topic. I. Essential issues related to economic development, population growth, and agriculture and forestry 1. Economic development and rapid population growth in developing countries 2. Two global agricultural problems caused by demographic patterns and changes in the food supply and demand structure 3. Agricultural regulation problems in developed countries and agricultural protection policies 4. Food shortages in developing countries and agricultural exploitation policies 5. International competition over agricultural trade II. Agricultural and forestry production and its relation to resource and environmental issues 6. Multifunctionality inherent in agricultural and forestry production 7. Development of modern farming methods for increasing food production and productivity and environmental pollution problems due to modern farming methods III. Aiming for sustainable agricultural and forestry production 8. Characteristics of general public goods and market failure in supply-demand adjustment 9. General measures to mitigate and eliminate market failures 10. Characteristics and root causes of agriculture-related resource and environmental problems 11. Current status of agricultural, food, and environmental issues in Japan, the United States, Europe, and other developed countries, and development of agricultural and environmental policies 12. Current status of agricultural, food, and environmental issues in China and other developing countries, and development of agricultural and environmental policies 13. Final examination 14.
