Outline and Purpose of the Course Principles of Agricultural Science is a research field that considers the future of agricultural science as a field of science based on its characteristics, historical processes, and present situation. In the process of modernization, agricultural science has had a positive impact, contributing greatly to increasing the production of food for human beings, but it has also caused environmental problems in addition to altering people's way of life and creating ethical issues. Agricultural science is a field directly related to nutrition, and it is a field that is fundamentally involved in the survival of human beings; as such, it is also an area where the participation of the general public will become increasingly important in the future. With regard to these and other issues, in addition to considerations from historical, social, and ethical perspectives, the aim of this course is to show guidelines for the future of agriculture.
Course Goals Understanding the history, characteristics, social mission, and contemporary issues that agricultural science has been pursuing as a science and being able to recognize the issues in modern agricultural science. Being able to master a thought framework based on ethics when thinking about what agricultural science should be. Being able to learn critical thinking for social analysis.

3. The characteristics of agricultural science as a science
4. The creation of modern agricultural science: looking back on the history of agricultural science
5. The history of agricultural science in Japan
6. The characteristics of modern agricultural science
7. The criteria for judging what is good: ethics lecture
8. The consequences of modern agricultural science 1: environmental issues/biodiversity
9-11. The consequences of modern agricultural science 2: life and ethical issues
12-13. Agricultural science theory from the food and agriculture system
14. Farming methods/agricultural science and modern times
15. Final test
16. Feedback will be communicated separately
Evaluation Methods and Policy The evaluation criteria and level of achievement will be in accordance with the "Evaluation Criteria and Level of Achievement" section in the student handbook of Faculty of Agriculture for the relevant year.
The evaluation method consists of regular tests (70%) and small reports (every lesson)(30%).
Course Requirements None
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Reviewing the content of each lesson and discussion. Each student will work on developmental learning.
Textbooks Textbooks/References Related materials will be distributed in each lesson.
