Outline and Purpose of the Course Irrigation/drainage science is a systematization of regional water management technique, but since water control affects not only water but also substance and thermal environment, it is possible to be applied for controlling environment-friendly water, substance and thermal environment management. We aim to acquire the basic knowledge of the analysis and diagnosis method necessary for this and the specific method using the personal computer. In other words, we will acquire skills to develop programs for numerical analysis of water, heat, substance transport in soil, and hydrological runoff analysis methods. In addition, we perform calculations using data specifically and discuss the results.
Course Goals We will prepare an analysis program for water movement and heat transfer in soil using VBA language on Excel and operate it to investigate the analysis result. Making it possible to handle a program for water, heat, and solute transport in soil (HYDRUS). Making it possible to analyze runoff using a tank model etc. Also, analyzing the phenomenon by yourself, so that the results can be accurately presented.
In addition, working on exercises on water, heat and chemical substances in soil (English document) and understanding the fundamental matters.
Schedule and Contents First course-hour:
1. Programming of heat transfer in soil using Excel VBA
2. Exercise on the above
3. Programming of infiltration using Excel VBA
4. Exercise on the above
5. Simulation of infiltration and evaporation using HYDRUS
6. Inverse solution for soil hydraulic properties using HYDRUS
7. Simulation of substance transport in soil using HYDRUS
8. Simulation of heat transfer in soil using HYDRUS
9. Runoff analysis
10.-13. Problem setting and analysis on water, heat and solute transport
14. Presentation and discussion
15. Feedback: Accept and respond to questions from students.
Second course-hour:
English exercises for water, substance, heat transport in soil
Evaluation Methods and Policy [Evaluation method]
Active participation (50 marks) and presentation&discussions (50 marks)
[Evaluation criteria]
The evaluation criteria and policies are in accordance with the "Evaluation Criteria and Policies" described in the Student Handbook of the Faculty of Agriculture for the relevant year.
Course Requirements it is necessary to learn Irrigation and Drainage, Environmental hydrology, and Soil Physics.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Programming with Excel VBA requires work outside of class hours. Work actively and strive to acquire programming skills. Repetitive operation is indispensable for water, heat and solute transport analysis, so it is important to review HYDRUS outside class hours.
For concrete calculation problems concerning water, heat and chemical substance movement in farmland soil, prepare and review for about several hours.
Textbooks Textbooks/References Handouts and files are distributed.
