Outline and Purpose of the Course | Sustainable use and management of farmland, the basis of food production, is becoming a global challenge. Farmland and farming villages must be maintained and managed for food production and their close multifunctional connections between people's lives and the natural ecosystems. This course focuses on the structure of paddy fields' agricultural production base and engineering maintenance methods.
Course Goals |
・Deepen understanding of the current state of farmland in Japan and the world ・Deepen understanding of soil and the essential characteristics of farmland, especially paddy fields ・Deepen understanding of how to improve the infrastructure of farmland ・Deepen understanding of social aspects related to farmland consolidation |

Schedule and Contents |
Lecture 1: What is arm land consolidation engineering? Lecture 2: The role and history of farmland in Japan: Global food production and farmland Lecture 3: Structure of paddy fields Lecture 4: Soil and irrigation of paddy fields Lecture 5: Drainage from paddy fields (1): Surface drainage Lecture 6: Drainage from paddy fields (2): Subsurface drainage Lecture 7: Generalization of paddy fields Lecture 8: Outline of land improvement and farmland system Lecture 9: Plot plan of paddy fields Lecture 10: Substitution system Lecture 11: Method of land improvement Lecture 12: Environmentally friendly construction methods Lecture 13: Development of large-scale paddy fields Lecture 14: Development and smart agriculture on slopes [Final Examination] Lecture 15: Feedback: Students will be contacted separately regarding feedback methods. * During each lecture, students will be asked to submit brief assignments on subtopics of the lecture; feedback will be provided the following week, if necessary. * Please check KULASIS, PandA, etc., because lectures might be implemented online. |

Evaluation Methods and Policy | Grading criteria and policies are based on the grading criteria and policies described in the Handbook of the Faculty of Agriculture for the applicable year. The weights of the grading criteria are the usual performance scores (25%), small assignments (25%), and the final exam (50%).
Course Requirements | Recommended: Courses in soil physics (C126), environmental hydrology (C127), irrigation and drainage (C129), and rural planning (C130).
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) | Please review each lecture based on the lecture materials and textbooks distributed in the lecture. Rather than merely memorizing the terminology, please consider how to use the background, different ways of thinking, knowledge, and techniques for solving problems.
Textbooks | Textbooks/References | The lectures will be based on 山路永司・塩沢 昌編 『農地環境工学 第2版』 (文永堂出版) [Eiji Yamaji and Masaru Shiozawa, Agricultural Land Environmental Engineering (2nd ed.)], (Buneidou Publishing) ISBN:9784830041327, but additional materials may be distributed as appropriate.
References, etc. | 田渕俊雄 『世界の水田 日本の水田』 (農山漁村文化協会) [Toshio Tabuchi, Paddy in the World: Paddy in Japan, (Rural Culture Association)], ISBN:4540991132. Other materials may be introduced during lectures as needed. Since it will help to understand the basic structure of farmland, particularly paddy fields, we recommend that you read this book as an introduction before the first lecture. |
