Number of Credits 2 Course Type Lecture
Target Year 2nd year students Target Student
Language Japanese Day/Period Mon.2
Instructor name UNAMI KOUICHI (Graduate School of Agriculture Associate Professor)
TAKEUCHI JIYUNICHIROU (Graduate School of Agriculture Associate Professor)
Outline and Purpose of the Course This course explains the basic theories of hydraulics and their applications in engineering. It enables students to acquire basic knowledge necessary for understanding the dynamics of water in nature and designing hydraulic structures.
Course Goals To be able to apply one's knowledge of mathematics and physics to systematically understanding hydraulic phenomena.
Schedule and Contents Lectures will be conducted for 1-3 weeks on the following topics:

1. Overview of hydraulics in mathematical physics and civil and environmental engineering (Unami)
2. Hydrostatics (Unami)
3. Basics of fluid motion (Unami)
4. Laminar and turbulent flows (Unami)
5. Conservation law of mass of fluids (Takeuchi)
6. Conservation law of momentum of fluids (Takeuchi)
7. Perfect fluid and Bernoulli's theorem (Takeuchi)
8. Steady flows in pipes (Unami)
9. Steady flows in open channels (Unami)
10. Unsteady flows in open channels (Unami)
11. Final examination / Student ability evaluation (Unami, Takeuchi)

Feedback process will be shared separately, and the brief report and final examination will be explained.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluation will consider the reports (30 marks), final examination (30 marks), and attendance (40 marks). It is compulsory to submit the reports and take the examination. These are essential to evaluate the ability of the student. Therefore, if they cannot be verified, the student will be failed regardless of attendance. The evaluation criteria and achievement level are in accordance with the "Evaluation Criteria and Achievement Level" described in the Student Handbook of the Faculty of Agriculture for the relevant year.
Course Requirements It is advised to have completed Applied Mathematics (C114). Acquiring a basic knowledge of mechanics and calculus is encouraged, but explanations will be given if necessary.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Review the contents of each lecture and make a habit of trying to scientifically understand common phenomena related to water.
Textbooks Textbooks/References Materials will be mainly on the board, as well as distributed through KULASIS as needed.
References, etc. Will be introduced during class
