Outline and Purpose of the Course The aim is to learn mechanics, material properties and treatment of soil and concrete.
Course Goals To design a mix proportion of concrete.
To understand the classification of soil and to be able to calculate various basic material properties.
To understand the mechanism of soil deformation and to be able to calculate the settlement due to the deformation.
To understand the flow of water in soil and to be able to predict it.
Schedule and Contents Lecture 1: Guidance
Lecture 2: Material (various properties of soil and concrete)
Lecture 3: Soil classification/compaction
Lectures 4-6: Water flow in soil
Lecture 7: Critical hydraulic gradient
Lecture 8: Effective stress
Lectures 9-11: Soil consolidation
Lectures 12: Problem-solving practice
Lectures 13 and 14: Soil shearing

Evaluation Methods and Policy 【Assessment method】
Determined based on the report (20 points) and the end-of-semester exam (80 points).
A mid-term exam may not be administered due to timetabling issues.

Course Requirements This course is compulsory for students taking Materials for Construction/Experiments in Environmental Geotechnics.
