Instructor name NOGUCHI RYOZO (Graduate School of Agriculture Professor)
Outline and Purpose of the Course Mechanical parts and civil engineering structures are designed on the assumption that they do not break, but it is necessary to understand the properties of materials to produce rational designs. The purpose of this course is to understand the definition and properties of stress and strain by studying the basics of material mechanics and structural analysis, that is, the equilibrium of forces and deformation (deflection) of a target object. Students will learn how to obtain the reaction and deflection of beams when various external forces are applied. It is noted that this course deals with statically determinate problems where unknown reactions can solely be determined by the equilibrium of force and moment.
Course Goals To understand the statics of a target object and thereby be able to solve the following problems:

1. Understanding the equilibrium of a rigid object's force and moment.
2. Understanding the meaning of centroid of planar figures and the second moment of area and calculating them.
3. Understanding the relationship between stress and strain, and calculating shear force and bending moment distribution.
4. Calculating the deformation (deflection) of beams.
5. Calculating the forces acting on the members of a truss structure.

Evaluation Methods and Policy [Evaluation method]
Evaluated out of a total of 100 marks, consisting of 5 marks for lecture response, 5 marks for reports, and 90 marks for the final examination.
[Evaluation criteria]
The evaluation criteria and policies are in accordance with the "Evaluation Criteria and Policies" described in the Student Handbook of the Faculty of Agriculture for the relevant year.
Course Requirements Nothing in particular
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Make sure to review the contents of each lecture using the distributed materials. They also contain problems for reports, so it is advisable to solve them regularly.
Textbooks Textbooks/References Will not be used. Reference materials will be distributed as necessary.
References, etc. Will be introduced during class
