Outline and Purpose of the Course Securing food and energy and protecting the environment are the challenges for humankind in the 21st century. To this end, it is necessary to understand food science and life science and to revitalize agriculture. Mechanical engineering and physics play a large role in the above, and the aforementioned issues are considered from their perspective.
Course Goals To gain an overview of the various machines and facilities used in food production and a good understanding of the mechanized system and complete production process.
Schedule and Contents The following topics will be covered for 1-2 weeks each by 3 instructors:

1. Current situation of agriculture in Japan, food production system (Nakashima)
2. Energy and resource utilization(Nakashima)
3. Tractor engineering and plant environmental engineering (Nakashima)
4. Agricultural systems engineering (Nakashima)
5. Agricultural machines I (Iida)
6. Agricultural machines II (Iida)
7. Field robotics (Iida)
8. Precision agriculture and remote sensing (Iida)
9. Precision livestock farming and precision fish farming (Kondo)
10. Agricultural facilities for cereals, fruits, and vegetables (Kondo)
11. Post-harvest technology and produce quality (Kondo)
12. Nondestructive inspection technology and traceability for food safety and security (Kondo)

Comprehensive evaluation based on quizzes conducted during lectures, reports (30 marks), and final examination (70 marks).
