Bioorganic Chemistry II

Numbering Code U-AGR02 3B121 LJ79 Year/Term 2022 ・ Second semester
Number of Credits 2 Course Type Lecture
Target Year 3rd year students Target Student
Language Japanese Day/Period Fri.2
Instructor name MIYOSHI HIDETO (Graduate School of Agriculture Professor)
Outline and Purpose of the Course This course provides a basic introduction to life phenomena from the viewpoint of organic chemistry. Specifically, it explains the cells’ energy production system and the synthesis and action mechanisms of biologically active compounds acting on this system from the viewpoint of chemical biology (bio-organic chemistry).
Course Goals Students will learn concepts from an organic chemical point of view based on their strict interaction with the target molecule when understanding the mechanism of action of various bioactive compounds.
Schedule and Contents A total of 15 lectures will be given.

Week 1: Orientation
Weeks 2-3: Historical changes in ATP biosynthesis and chemiosmosis theory
Weeks 4-5: Bioenergy transformation membrane and proton pump
Weeks 6-10: Functions and chemistry of respiratory chain electron transport chains and quinones
Weeks 11-13: Introduction of various bioactive compounds that act on respiratory chain electron transfer enzymes
Week 14: Chemistry of bioenergy transformation membrane (e.g., artificial photosynthesis system, etc.)
[Final exam]
Week 15: Feedback: We plan to discuss questions throughout the lecture period intensively. In addition, we will set a short time within each lecture to study the various reactions in Vollhardt and Schore's Organic Chemistry: Structure and Function from the first and second years to deepen the understanding of organic chemistry.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluation method: Report test grade (80 points) and general score evaluation (20 points)
The evaluation criteria and policies are based on those described in the Student Handbook of the Faculty of Agriculture for the relevant academic year.
Course Requirements Recommended: Introduction to Applied Life Science IV, Organic Reaction Mechanism Theory I, and Organic Reaction Mechanism Theory II
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) During class, we will hold a quiz to determine what you have learned during the previous week, therefore, please review and participate.
Textbooks Textbooks/References Reference material will be distributed.
