Organic Reaction Mechanism II

Numbering Code U-AGR02 2B119 LJ79 Year/Term 2022 ・ Second semester
Number of Credits 2 Course Type Lecture
Target Year 2nd year students Target Student
Language Japanese Day/Period Thu.2
Instructor name MIYASHITA MASAHIRO (Graduate School of Agriculture Associate Professor)
Outline and Purpose of the Course Following Organic Reaction Mechanism I, students will learn about the system of organic compounds and basic organic chemical reactions, and deepen their understanding of the mechanism of organic chemical reaction. It is expected that students will not only acquire the basic knowledge required to synthesize various organic compounds, but also fundamentally understand life phenomena regulated by various organic chemical reactions, including enzymatic reactions.
Course Goals Students will learn about basic organic chemical reactions and understand the mechanism through which each reaction progresses. This will enable students to acquire the knowledge necessary for chemical synthesis experiments and encourage them to think about various reactions in life phenomena in reference to organic chemistry.
Schedule and Contents The lectures will be organized as follows:
Lectures 1 and 2: Enols, enolates, and the aldol condensation
Lectures 3 and 4: Carboxylic acids
Lectures 5 and 6: Carboxylic acid derivatives and the Hammett equation
Lectures 7 and 8: Amines and their derivatives (the mid-term exam will take place in Lecture 8)
Lecture 9: Review of the first half (comments on the mid-term exam)
Lectures 10 and 11: Chemistry of benzene substituents
Lectures 12 and 13: Ester enolates and the Claisen condensation
Lecture 14: Carbohydrates
 <The end-of-semester exam>
Lecture 15: Feedback

Students will learn the nomenclature of organic compounds, the characteristics of structure and physical properties, the reaction mechanism, and the synthetic method. The lectures follow the textbook「ボルハルト・ショアー現代有機化学[第8版 ] (Chapters 18-24). During each lecture, a handout with a summary of the key points will be distributed.
Evaluation Methods and Policy 【Assessment method】
The end-of-semester exam (80%) and attitude (20%)
Attitude is assessed based on attendance, the mid-term exam, and assignments.
【Assessment criteria】
Assessment criteria and policy are drawn from "Assessment criteria and policy" in the current version of the Faculty of Agriculture Student Handbook.
Course Requirements Introduction to Applied Life Science IV and Organic Reaction Mechanism I are prerequisites.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Read the textbook and solve the problems in each chapter. Since these problems come with answers in the textbook, first, attempt to solve the problem on your own, and then check your answer.
