Number of Credits 2 Course Type Lecture
Target Year 2nd year students Target Student
Language Japanese Day/Period Thu.2
Instructor name MORI NAOKI (Graduate School of Agriculture Professor)
Outline and Purpose of the Course Building on the basics of organic chemistry learned in Introduction to Applied Life Science IV, the objective is to learn about the system of organic compounds and deepen the understanding of the mechanism of organic chemical reaction.
Course Goals The aim of the course is for students to learn to indicate the transfer of electrons using arrows in a basic organic reaction. Students are encouraged to memorize basic reactions in order to apply them.
Students will learn about the reaction mechanism, and they will be able to comprehend the basics of diverse organic reaction and biochemical reaction through their learning.
Schedule and Contents Lectures will be given on the following topics:

Lecture 1: The chemistry of alcohol
Lecture 2: The chemistry of ether
Lecture 3: Reaction of alcohol and ether
Lecture 4: Alkenes and the carbon-carbon double bond
Lecture 5: Reaction of alkenes
Lecture 6: Alkynes and the carbon-carbon triple bond
Lecture 7: Reaction of alkynes
Lecture 8: Delocalized π electron system
Lecture 9: Benzene and aromaticity
Lecture 10: Electrophilic substitution reaction to benzene derivatives
Lecture 10: Substituent effect of benzene ring on reaction
Lecture 12: Aldehydes and ketones 1
Lecture 13: Aldehydes and ketones 2
Lecture 14: Reaction of carbonyl compound
Lecture 15: The end-of-semester exam

Students will learn naming of compounds, characteristics of structure and physical property, reaction mechanism, synthetic method, function in life phenomenon.

Feedback lectures are given when necessary on important points of each topic.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Students are required to attend at least 60% of the classes.
Assessment is based on the end-of-semester exam (80%) and the assignment (20%).
Assessment follows the stipulations in "Assessment criteria and policy" in the current version of the Faculty of Agriculture Student Handbook.
Course Requirements Introduction to Applied Life Science IV is a prerequisite.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students are encouraged to grasp the basic points of each lecture by pre-reading the textbook, reviewing, and solving problems related to the lecture topic(s).
