Introduction to Applied Life Science IV

Numbering Code U-AGR02 1B106 LJ79 Year/Term 2022 ・ Second semester
Number of Credits 2 Course Type Lecture
Target Year 1st year students Target Student
Language Japanese Day/Period Wed.2
Instructor name MURAI MASATOSHI (Graduate School of Agriculture Associate Professor)
Outline and Purpose of the Course To learn about the formation of organic compounds (the building blocks of life) and organic chemistry (the basis for understanding life phenomena). This course is preliminary to the courses "Organic Reaction Mechanism Theory (I, II)" and "Organic Structural Analysis," which will be studied in the second year, and "Organic Chemistry Experiments," which will be conducted in the third year.
Course Goals To understand all of the topics mentioned in the Course Plan and learn to consider the mechanism of chemical reactions.
Schedule and Contents Week 1: Orientation
Weeks 2-4: Structure and bonding in organic molecules
(Chapter 1)
Weeks 5-6: Structure and reactivity (Chapter 2, Acids and bases, polar and non-polar molecules)
Week 7: Reactions of alkanes (Chapter 3, Bond-dissociation energy, radical reactions)
Week 8: Cyclic alkanes (Chapter 4)
Weeks 9-10: Stereoisomers (Chapter 5)
Week 11: Properties and reactions of haloalkanes (Chapter 6, Bimolecular nucleophilic substitution)
Week 12: Further reactions of haloalkanes (Chapter 7, Unimolecular substitution and pathways of elimination)
Weeks 13-14: Hydroxy functional group: alcohol (Chapter 8, Properties of the alcohols and strategy in synthesis)
Week 15: Feedback

*Class structure: In addition to regular lectures, exercises will be given to improve understanding.
*The periodical exam will focus on questions similar to the exercises conducted during class.
*Feedback: We plan to summarize all the lectures up to Week 14 and explain the questions to be expected on the exam.
Evaluation Methods and Policy [Evaluation method]
Class performance including attendance (20 marks) and final examination (80 marks).
[Evaluation criteria]
The evaluation criteria and achievement level are in accordance with the "Evaluation Criteria and Achievement Level" described in the Student Handbook of the Faculty of Agriculture for the relevant year.
Course Requirements Nothing in particular
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) The scope of next week's lecture will be explained during the previous lecture, so come prepared.
