Outline and Purpose of the Course The aim of this course is to provide a deeper understanding of the properties of elaborate and subtle life phenomena at the molecular level using knowledge of chemistry. We will outline the main components of living organisms, their composition, structure, and function, and then explain their metabolic dynamism in vivo.
Course Goals To learn the basics of biochemistry and develop the capability to delve into further research independently.
Schedule and Contents Lectures will cover the following topics.

Day 1: Monosaccharides: Structure and properties (Inoue)
Day 2: Polysaccharides: Structure and properties (Inoue)

Day 5: Glycolysis control mechanisms (Inoue)
Day 6: Synthesis and decomposition of glycogen (Inoue)
Day 7: Hormonal regulation of glycogen metabolism and gluconeogenesis (Inoue)
Day 8: Types of amino acids and their properties (Kioka)
Day 9: Chirality and physiological effects of amino acids (Kioka)
Day 10: Protein purification method: Types of chromatography (Kioka)
