Outline and Purpose of the Course | To develop basic academic skills to examine topics related to applied life science, such as the environment, life, food, and energy, mainly from the perspective of chemistry. Based on chemistry learned in high school, students learn the fundamentals that are necessary to master specialist subjects at university. It is intended that Weeks 1 and 15 will be spent receiving guidance from teaching staff. | |||
Course Goals | To develop fundamental concepts of basic physical and analytical chemistry and chemical thermodynamics which serve as basic chemistry and calculating abilities. To apply the knowledge in the field of life science. Furthermore, to acquire an overview of the field of physical chemistry in applied life science. | |||

(Lecture plan) Lectures 2-9 (Shirai) Basic physical and analytical chemistry The unit and formula, differential calculus, and integral calculus, which are useful for science Two faces of entropy What is the essence of chemical equilibrium? Biophysical chemistry in the area of applied life sciences What is polarography? What is a Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR)? Nerve transmission, cell-to-cell communication, and the electric circuit Assessment is based on the report and the end-of-semester exam. Lectures 10-14 (Sugase) Basic physical and analytical chemistry Physical quantities and units What to be mindful of in experiments and how to deal with data Basics in statistical processing Equilibrium and kinetics Biophysical chemistry in the area of applied life sciences Structural analysis of biomolecules Structural chemistry Assessment is based on the report and the end-of-semester exam.
