Number of Credits 2 Course Type Lecture
Target Year 3rd year students Target Student
Language Japanese Day/Period Wed.2
Instructor name SAWAYAMA SHIGEKI (Graduate School of Agriculture Professor)
Outline and Purpose of the Course Explaining the foundations of marine environmental microbiology, including production of useful substances by microorganisms such as microalgae, labyrinthula, fungi, archaebacteria, bacteria, etc. in oceans and lakes. In particular, explaining in detail about the production of useful substances, such as omega 3 fatty acids and carotenoids that use microalgae, etc. from the viewpoint of molecular biology and genetic engineering. The computers of the satellite laboratory will be used for gene searches, construction of expression vectors, and creationof molecular phylogenetic trees.
Course Goals Understanding basic matters related to marine-environment microbiology.
Schedule and Contents The lectures will cover the following subjects.
1. Introduction
2. Members of marine microorganisms
3. Microalgal cell factory
4. Foundations of genetic engineering
5. Genetic manipulation of microalgae
6. Gene search - computer exercise
7. Construction of expression vectors - computer exercise
8. Creation of molecular phylogenetic trees - computer exercise
9. Labyrinthula
10. Eutrophication, red tide, and shellfish poison
11. Bioethanol - filamentous fungus and yeast
12. Biogas - methane-producing bacteria
13. The impact of global warming and acidification
14. The relationship with material recycling
15. Feedback: questions will be accepted by email during the feedback period.
Evaluation Methods and Policy The evaluation criteria and level of achievement will be based on the "Evaluation Criteria and Level of Achievement" section of the student handbook of Faculty of Agriculture for the relevant year.
Course Requirements Students should have taken microbiology and cell biology I-III and have basic knowledge of molecular biology, cell biology, and microbiology.
