Outline and Purpose of the Course | Understanding biological characteristics of weeds is essential for establishing a sustainable weed management system. These include the classification and distribution of weeds, their life history characteristics, the evolution of mimic weeds and herbicide-resistant weeds, and changes in weed flora. This course aims to provide basic knowledge of these biological characteristics of weeds.
Course Goals | To understand biological characteristics of weeds to establish a sustainable weed management system. Based on what we have learned, we will be able to explain how weeds escape from weeding and we manage weeds.
Schedule and Contents |
2-3 weeks of lectures will be conducted for each of the following topics, a total of 15 lectures, incorporating the latest developments of weed science in each : 1. Definition of weeds, their origin, and role in agricultural ecosystems Definition and origin of weeds, their ecological role in paddy and upland fields 2. Classification and distribution of weeds, major weeds in Japan and the world Weed classification from the perspective of agricultural production and their distribution. Introduction of major weeds in Jaoan and the world 3. Biological characteristics of weeds, comparative biology of crops and weeds Biological characteristics of weeds regarding the frequency of habitat disturbance and the comparison to crops. In addition, the genetic exchange between crops and weeds will be explained. 4. Weed reproductive characteristics, germination and seed dormancy Characteristics of sexual and asexual reproduction from the perspective of weed control. In addition, the characteristics of seed propagation are explained and the dormancy of weed seeds discussed. 5. Allelopathy of weeds, composition and succession of weed flora Allelopathy of weeds, composition and succession of weed flora related to human activities, problem of invasive alien weed species. 6. Evolution of weeds, mimicry and herbicide-resistance Evolution of mimic weeds and the evolution of herbicide resistance to herbicide. 7. Adaptation of weeds to agricultural practices Discussing the adaptation of weeds to agricultural practices as a course summary. 8. Final examination/Evaluation of learning 9. Feedback We lecturers will be available in the laboratory to answer students' questions. Questions will also be accepted via e-mail. |

Evaluation Methods and Policy |
[Evaluation method] Students' knowledge of the biological characteristics will be evaluated based on the results of the final examination (100 marks). [Evaluation criteria] The evaluation criteria and achievement level are in accordance with the "Evaluation Criteria and Achievement Level" described in the Student Handbook of the Faculty of Agriculture for the relevant year. |
