Outline and Purpose of the Course To understand the basics of marine microbial life. To achieve this, lectures will be given from the perspectives of microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and genome science, regarding the diversity, characteristics, metabolic systems, and genomes of marine microorganisms (bacteria and archaea) that live in various marine environments such as the open sea, enclosed seas, deep seas, tropical coral reefs, and polluted waters.
Course Goals To systematically understand the basics of marine microbiology and become able to explain the latest microorganism classification system, marine microbial ecosystems, metabolic characteristics of microorganisms, and the latest genomic analysis and methods.
Schedule and Contents There will be 1-2 weeks of classes for each of the following topics:
(1) History of microbiology [2 weeks]
    Outlining marine microbiology by introducing the history of microbial research
(2) Development of marine microbiology research methods [2 weeks]
    Overview of microorganism collection, isolation, culture, physiological ecology, and genomic research methods
(3) Classification and diversity of marine microorganisms [2 weeks]
    Classification of bacteria and archaea and genomic diversity
(4) Marine microorganism metabolism and growth [2 weeks]
    Major metabolic processes that acquire the chemical energy required for microbial growth
(5) Molecular biology of marine microorganisms [2 weeks]
    Basic understanding of the composition and flow of genetic information

(6) Marine environment and microbial ecosystems [1 week]
    Metabolic diversity of marine microorganisms and their role in the matter cycle
(7) Microbial ecosystems in deep-sea hydrothermal environments [1 week]
    Distribution of unique and diverse (ultra) thermophilic bacteria along with their physiological and biochemical properties and roles
(8) Marine viruses [1 week]
    Viruses that infect marine microorganisms and their ecological role
(9) Development of gene resources from marine microorganisms [1 week]
    Development of gene resources from marine microorganism genome information and metagenome analysis

Feedback process will be shared separately.
     
Evaluation Methods and Policy Absolute score will be given based on 2 reports (10 marks each) and the examination (80 marks).
The evaluation criteria and achievement level are in accordance with the "Evaluation Criteria and Achievement Level" described in the Student Handbook of the Faculty of Agriculture for the relevant year.
Course Requirements It is desirable to have completed "Microbiology" and "Cell Biology II."
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Prepare using the lecture materials and reference books such as Essential細胞生物学 and 海の環境微生物学 (恒星社厚生閣). Use the lectures notes and materials as a starting point and improve your knowledge with reference books.
Textbooks Textbooks/References Will not be used, materials will be distributed as necessary.
