Outline and Purpose of the Course Reading books on historical topics using primary historical materials, students learn methodology of historical studies and methods of historical research by referring to documents cited and annotated there.


Course Goals The academic basis of historical research lies in the analysis of primary historical materials. Critical reading and interpretation is indispensable for analyzing and obtaining information from primary historical materials. In this course students learn methods to obtain reliable information from historical materials and to develop historical research based information acquired from historical materials.
Schedule and Contents Students are assigned chapter(s) for each class. A designated student presents summary and comments for the assigned chapter(s). Discussion follows the presentation, in which all the attendants participation is required.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluate by regular attitude scores and reports.
Course Requirements Exercise I is a compulsory course for students of Contemporary History. They must take 2 credits each for Courses A and B.
If there are special circumstances such as studying abroad, consult with the faculty in advance.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) All students must read in advance the literature and historical materials that will be featured in the class.
Textbooks Textbooks/References Instruct during the class. We plan to read the following in this fiscal year.
Ernest R. May, ed., American Cold War Strategy: Interpreting NSC 68 (Boston: Bedford Books of St. Martin's Press, 1993).
You will be instructed on how to obtain the text in the first lecture.
