Outline and Purpose of the Course The Mandarin “官話” dealt with here refers to the common language passed through in China during the Ming and Qing periods. It does not deal with the dialects widely disseminated in China that are now called Mandarin dialects “官話方言.” This common historical language is depicted and spoken in various forms in the literature, but no definitive definition has yet been given on its actual form. This course will consider the character that Mandarin had through careful reading and deciphering of the language that appeared in various literature materials during the Ming and Qing periods.
Course Goals * Students will learn deepen their understanding of the various forms of the Chinese language by reading Mandarin literature.
Schedule and Contents Week 1. Introduction
Weeks 2-5. The emergence of Mandarin: From the literature of the Ming Dynasty
Weeks 6-10. The transformation of Mandarin: From the literature of the Qing Dynasty
Weeks 11-14. Mandarin crosses the sea: From the literature of Ryukyu and Nagasaki
Week 15. Summary
Evaluation Methods and Policy Participation (small reports, class participation) 50% and semester-end paper 50%.

Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students should read and interpret the distributed materials before class. Student might be asked to translate particular segments during class.
