Outline and Purpose of the Course Many commentaries were written to the Mulamadhyamaka of Nagarjuna by various authors from different points of view. Accordingly, Madhyamaka had developed in many ways. The purpose of this seminar is to read some chapters from the Prasannapada by Candrakirti, extant also in Sanskrit, together with other related commentaries to the Mulamadhyamaka to better understand the thought of middle Madhyamaka in 6/7 century and its philosophical background.
Course Goals To explore the diverse arguments seen in the Prasnnapada together with other related commentaries to the Mulamadhyamaka to better understand middle Madhyamaka and its philosophical background
Schedule and Contents Introduce the author, his writing, and backgrounds in the first class, and then from the second session, spend 14 class sessions on closely reading Prasannapda, while explaining related questions. The 15th session will be spent on feedback.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Based on in-class performance.
Course Requirements Basic reading comprehension skills for Sanskrit literature and Tibetan literature required. Should take class together with second semester seminar.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students required to be sufficiently aware of questions on the class theme, and be sufficiently prepared to attend each class session.
