Outline and Purpose of the Course The origins of Jainism, a religious order still found in India today; is contemporaneous with the founding of Buddhism, and shares main similarities. Ardhamagadhi (Amg) is one of the Prakit (Middle Indo-Aryan languages) used in the scriptures of Svetambara (white-clad) Jainism, and has similarities with Pali. While actually reading texts written in Amg, they may become Prakrit.
Course Goals Understand the characteristics of Prakrit, whose phonological features and grammar are different from Sanskrit, by reading text written in Ardhamagadhi. Thus, being able to use the reference documents needed to examine the meaning and vocabulary.
Schedule and Contents 1st session: Outline of Ardhamagadhi, and introduction to Svetambara (white-clad) Jainis as passed down in dictionaries, reference books, and Amg texts
2nd session: Phonological changes in vowels and consonants
3rd session: Noun changes
4th session: Pronoun changes
5th session: Use of a-stem verbs, e-stem verbs (present tense, future tense)
6th session: Past tense, participles, etc.
7th session-10th session: The prose part of Chapter 1 of ?bassaya which summarizes the fixed forms that can be chanted on a daily basis, and Chapter 4 of Dasaveyaliya which describes the Five Great Vows.
11th session-14th session: Chapter 3 of Dasaveyaliya, which describes prohibitions for priests
15th session: Summary of everything, including remaining topics through the 14th

Course Requirements Should be taking beginner Sanskrit grammar.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Preparation: Sanskrit grammar trainees check Sanskrit cases for the same grammar.
