Outline and Purpose of the Course In this class, students will deal mainly with cognitive semantics theory, and discuss various phenomenon related to semantic extension of language, such as metaphor and metonymy.
Course Goals ・ Understand the theoretical framework of cognitive linguistics, and learn the viewpoints applied to linguistics research.
・ Cultivate skills for observing linguistic phenomenon.
Schedule and Contents In this class, students will deal with several of the main themes of cognitive linguistics shown below (especially cognitive semantics theory), depending on their interests and course status, and will read relevant literature. The plan is to hold class every two weeks.

2nd: Theoretical summary of cognitive linguistics
3rd: Connection between linguistics and psychology (1):Differentiating figures and ground (Introduction)
4th: Connection between linguistics and psychology (1):Differentiating figures and ground (Discussion)
5th: Connection between linguistics and psychology (2):Line of sight and subjectivity (Introduction)
6th: Connection between linguistics and psychology (2):Line of sight and subjectivity (Discussion)
7th:Categorization and language (1):Prototype categories (Introduction)
8th:Categorization and language (1):Prototype categories (Discussion)
9th:Categorization and language (2):Abstraction and schema (Introduction)
10th:Categorization and language (2):Abstraction and schema (Discussion)
11th:Image schema and meaning of language (Introduction)
12th:Image schema and meaning of language (Discussion)
13th:Semantic extension: Metaphor and metonymy

Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluated overall based upon final paper (70%) and participation in class (30%).
Course Requirements Have gained a basic knowledge of general linguistics or cognitive linguistics.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Students are expected to have read indicated papers and identified problems before class.
