Outline and Purpose of the Course This course is aimed to help students to have a basic knowledge and understanding about the history of Japanese writing systems in its earlier ages (till Kamakura period).

Now Japanese language is almost exclusively written in kanji-kana majiri bun (漢字仮名交り文, kanji/hiragana mixed form), but this had not been a main form throughout the history of Japanese language. Writing Japanese started with introduction of kanji (漢字, Chinese characters) in around 5th century, and ever since various ways of writing have been made and developed. Besides, more than one form were used at the same era, chosen according to its purpose, readers and so on.

In this course we take a general view of them, and take a closer look at some topics, making use of recent studies.
Course Goals The goal of this course is to be able to understand and explain about the history of Japanese writing systems in the following 2 perspectives.
