Outline and Purpose of the Course In Russia, there are many ethnic minorities and many different languages are spoken. Of these, in this course we will examine the various Siberian languages. Siberia is an area of geographical proximity to Japan and also said to be close to Japanese in terms of language typology. Students will learn the grammar and read some texts to further understand some of the languages.
Course Goals After a general review of the various languages distributed in Siberia, students will learn about the local linguistic and sociolinguistic characteristics.
Students will be able to understand the structure of the languages examined in class using the vocabulary, dictionary and interlinear gloss. Students will also be able to examine linguistic topics.
Schedule and Contents Week 1 to 3: Overview of the Siberian languages and their circumstances
Week 4 to 8: A look at the Evenki language
Week 9 to 13: A look at the Nenets languages
Week 14 and 15: A look at the Hanti language
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluation will be based on several assignments that will be assigned in class (60%) and a final paper (40%)
Course Requirements Prior to enrolling on this course, it is recommended that students complete the Introduction to Language Studies course.
It is also preferable for students to have some knowledge of Russian (but this is not a requirement).
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Please go over the literature on Russian and Siberian ethnic groups that are available in Japanese.
Moreover, please make time to read the materials distributed in class and to complete the assigned tasks.
Students are expected to make typological comparisons with the language of their interest or their major, so please engage with the materials with curiosity toward linguistics topics.
