Outline and Purpose of the Course It is well known that Kitaro Nishida developed his theory of body in his later years. However, few studies have focused on this theory. Why? The starting point of Nishida’s philosophy was A Study of Good 『善の研究』, but there is less attention to the theory of body within this work. Unless we build an understanding of this theory that starts from A Study of Good, it will be hard to clarify its significance or scope. In addition, this theory has consistently raised sharp questions about the situation surrounding the body in modern Japan. To understand this theory in Nishida’s early and later years and to compare it with the current situation, we will read my book, "When the Body Relaxes" Kowabaru shintai ga hodokeru toki『こわばる身体がほどけるとき』, which I wrote based on the abovementioned concerns. Other writings of Nishida, on which this book is based, will also be examined and then discussed in class. With respect to the book, the goal is to “re-emphasize its central point and explore other lines of thought that could not be included in this work.
Course Goals Students will be able to understand and discuss the framework of Nishida’s philosophy and his theory of body, as well as contemporary physical conditions. They will also be able to understand and explain on their own the significance and scope of Nishida’s philosophy in the modern age.
