Outline and Purpose of the Course In Special Research Seminar II, the goal is to complete the stage of Shi (thinking) of Mon-Shi-Shu (hearing, thinking, practicing) diciplines. Students are encouraged to explore and learn various research techniques, read most recent materials related to their research, and to discuss and debate about the research topic with multiple advisors. Students should also attend meetings of Transdisciplinary Research Groups and seminars held by their advisors in order to obtain broad knowledge and deepened expertise. These activities are to foster communication skill, insights into research and development, fundamentals necessary for performing doctoral research, such as abilities of communication, planning, execution, writing, presentation, debate, and problem solving. To conclude the course, it is required to write a research paper (QE paper: equivalent to master’s thesis).
Course Goals To perform own research and write a research paper equivalent to master’s thesis (40 pages or 24,000 words)
Schedule and Contents Continue your research from the past year, have a prospect of your doctoral thesis in the 5th year, and conduct your research to submit a research paper (QE paper) at the end of the school year. Fully consult with your advisors. In addition, students must satisfy the requirements for attendance at Transdisciplinary Research Groups meetings (six meetings per half-year, including three presentations).
Evaluation Methods and Policy Presentations and publications of your research results are encouraged and evaluated. The final evaluation will be made based on these research activities as well as the research paper (QE paper) and its defense at the end of the school year. Attendance to meetings of Transdisciplinary Research Groups and seminars held by your advisors will be also considered.
Course Requirements Before taking the Qualification Examination (QE), a total of 30 credits, consisting of 16 credits of required subjects and 14 elective subjects should be completed, accompanied with qualified research orientation, and language ability of a score of 80 or higher on the TOEFL-iBT.
