Outline and Purpose of the Course This course will focus on the 19th and early 20th centuries and examine international views on politics and the economy by analyzing newspaper articles and reports. The students will learn to search for, analyze and interpret relevant source materials and engage in discussions with their peers.

Course Goals The course will provide students with an opportunity to study some of the most discussed issues in global and international history of the 19th and early 20th centuries. They will gain experience in finding and examining newspaper articles in English (as well as Japanese). At the same time, they will also get an insight into current research on the topic of international media history.
Schedule and Contents The course consists of the following stages:

Stage 1: The basics (weeks 1-3)
Introduction to the history of newspapers as well as the primary databases to find relevant articles in English and Japanese.

Stage 2: The main topics (weeks 4-8)
Discussing some of the main issues (e.g., media and economics, media and globalization, media and political scandals, media, and gender, media and war).

Stage 3: The cases studies (week 9-14):
Requires each student to select a particular issue individually, present a report, and lead a critical class discussion on the topic.

Feedback.
