Outline and Purpose of the Course Since the creation of life, organisms have evolved together with water. Eventually, water, which is sometimes called “matrix of life”, is involved in many biological processes including chemical reactions, and it is expected that understanding peculiar physical properties of water is essential for drawing a complete picture of life. This lecture aims to learn water behaviors on the molecular level from a perspective of electromagnetic optics, through acquiring ability to carry out fundamental optical calculations as well as to understand rules and phenomena underlying complicated behaviors of water.
Course Goals Below are attainment goals for students who take this course:
1) To learn a grounding in electromagnetics and dielectrics, and to enable fundamental calculations.
2) To understand physical properties of water behaving at various timescales and to explain peculiar characteristics of water in life.
Schedule and Contents 1. Maxwell equation in materials
2. Interaction between light and materials
3. Electromagnetic waves in materials (1)
4. Electromagnetic waves in materials (2)
5. Three states of water and hydrogen-bond structure
6. Dynamic structure of water on a picosecond timescale
7. Water as a matrix of life
8. Summaries
Evaluation Methods and Policy Comprehensive evaluation (mini-exam in class 50% and final exam 50%). Note that more than two-thirds of attendance is required. Refer to ‘2018 Guide to Degree Programs’ for attainment levels of evaluation.
