Outline and Purpose of the Course Use of mathematical models and numerical models is effective and even dispensable for development, management, and assessment of water resources. This course discusses fluid dynamics and thermodynamics of hydraulic phenomena as well as modeling methods for behaviors of water quality and ecosystems.
Course Goals Outlines and challenges in different topics in hydraulic and environmental modeling shall be widely understood.
Schedule and Contents ■ Modeling methods in environmental hydraulics (once)
Outline of modeling approaches in hydraulic phenomena including dynamics of environmental items such as water quality and biological populations.
■ Modeling methods for hydraulic problems (3 times)
Fundamentals of modeling methods for dynamics of water, which governs the flow field.
■ Modeling methods for water environmental problems (3 times)
Fundamentals of modeling methods for the behavior of water quality and ecosystems in the flow field of water.
■ Stochastic modeling methods in environmental hydraulics (4 times)
Basic concepts of modeling methods for problems in environmental hydraulics where stochastic behavior of phenomena is essential.
■ Outline of numerical methods (4 times)
Mathematical modeling methods and numerical modeling methods for different problems in environmental hydraulics. Description of different types of problems such as in steady and unsteady, stochastic and deterministic, or discrete and continuous situations. Introduction of representative numerical methods such as finite element and finite volume, with emphasis on background theories.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Evaluation will be based on in-class exams. Refer to '2017 Guide to Degree Programs' for attainment levels of evaluation.
Course Requirements Calculus and hydraulics of undergraduate level.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) This course deals with very fundamental engineering topics, which shall be utilized in MSc research of each student.
