| Outline and Purpose of the Course | The systems of management of rural villages in Asia differ in each country and region. This can be seen as a "rural system" created by "visible hands." Therefore, where are there universal rules in a unique rural system? In this course, we study the universal design embedded in each country's rural systems through the new institutional economics approach, which takes a universal microeconomic approach to each individual system. The course focuses on informal and formal rural systems in Japan and China, teaching that "trading-related efficiency" is always built in. | |||
| Course Goals | To learn the methodology of institutional analysis based on game theory and information economics, and analyze the efficiency of microeconomics in areas that have been dealt with by sociology, anthropology, law, and others. To understand through international comparisons that all social mechanisms, both formal and informal, have been rationally designed. | |||
| Schedule and Contents |
1. Introduction: What is New Institutional Economics? (2 lectures) Explanation of new institutional economics, which describes the character of the economy. 2. Mutual aid practices in Japanese villages (Embedding in culture I) Understanding the efficiency of mutual assistance practices in rural Japan. 3. Overview of changes in China's rural institutions Explanation of the rationality of the system in rural China by outlining the changes in the system. 4. Basic knowledge of game theory Outline of basic game theory. 5. Economic transactions embedded in Chinese rural culture (Embedding in culture II) Explanation of the rationality and efficiency of rural Chinese culture based on courtesy using game theory. 6. Basic knowledge of information economics (2 lectures) Explanation of information economics and contract theory to understand the course. 7. China's two-tier management system (Embedding in politics)(2 lectures) Lecture on the efficiency of the two-tiered management system used by China for agricultural management, using information economics. 8. Basic knowledge of bargaining games Explanation of bargaining games to understand the course. 9. Property rights and laws relating to agricultural land in China (Embedding in law) Interpreting the rationality of collective land laws through a bargaining game. 10. Chinese farmers co-op (Embedding in organization) Understanding the efficiency of an agricultural cooperative in a bargaining game. 11. The nature of the rural system Explanation of the rural system that is designed efficiently by "visible hands." 12. Feedback (Explanation of the final examination) Feedback will be conducted whenever necessary. |

| Evaluation Methods and Policy |
The evaluation is based on the final examination scores (80% weightage) and attendance (20% weightage). The evaluation criteria and achievement level are in accordance with the "Evaluation Criteria and Achievement Level" described in the Student Handbook of the Faculty of Agriculture for the relevant year. |
