Outline and Purpose of the Course The course focuses on regional analysis, which derives basic information for constructing regional plans in Japan from the national level to the municipality level. This course will outline the types of regional plans constructed based on the understanding of different areas, describe how traditional statistical analysis methods are applied to geographical data, and explain new possibilities of analytical methods with the expansion of platforms for the use of socioeconomic and geographical data prepared in recent years. Students will use free database available on the Internet during the course and acquire the basics of statistical knowledge. They will also learn the latest statistical analysis methods and their applications to real-world.
Course Goals ・Learn how to collect basic information and process collected data by regional analyses.
・Learn how to apply statistical analysis methods to geographic data.
・Understand the significance and necessity of regional planning at each spatial scale at various levels.
・Learn how to understand regional contexts and practical planning for desirable futures.
Schedule and Contents Each of the following topics will be covered. The number of lectures in [brackets] and the lecture schedule may be modified depending on the students’ background and depth of understanding. Students will be kept apprised of the lecture schedule and given due consideration so that they can prepare in advance.
1. Summary of regional planning theory and guidance on the course [Once, Saizen]
2. Explanation of the necessity of national land planning and regional planning with introducing overseas cases [Once, Saizen]
3. Outline of the use of available statistical information for planning and the basics of statistics [Twice, Saizen]
4. Explanation of correlation analysis and variance analysis, which are the basis of statistical analysis techniques, and explanation of application methods in regional analysis and the interpretation of the results. [Once, Saizen]
5. Explanation of population estimation methods required for national and regional planning [Once, Saizen]
6. Explanation of multiple regression analysis and principal component analysis using basic information necessary for national and regional planning, and explanation of the interpretation of the analysis results [Three times, Saizen]
7. Explanation of the Gini coefficient using basic information necessary for national and regional planning [Once, Saizen]
8. Explanation of spatial analysis and GIS applications using basic information necessary for national and regional planning [Once, Saizen]
9. Presentation of examples of field surveys on people’s lives and livelihoods, and outline of application methods of spatial analysis [3 times, Asano]
10. Feedback: Questions regarding comments and test results will be received and answered by e-mail in a specified period. We will also have the meetings if needed [Once, Saizen and Asano]
Evaluation Methods and Policy A comprehensive evaluation will be done based on exam grades, the usual performance scores (participation in classes, small tests, comments in classes, etc.), and reports. Point allocation is as follows.

Study outside of Class (preparation and review) Lectures will be based on the distributed materials. Materials needed to preview content will be distributed in advance. In addition, emphasis should be placed on carefully reading and reviewing materials after lecture.
