講演要旨：
How human language arose is one of the great mysteries in the evolution of Homo sapiens. While it is extremely challenging to directly confirm hypotheses of the actual process that led to the emergence of language, it is possible to formulate a theory that is broadly compatible with what we find in contemporary systems of communication among mammals, birds, and humans. Miyagawa, Berwick, & Okanoya (Frontiers of Psychology 2013) put forward such a hypothesis, which I will call the Integration Hypothesis of human language evolution.
In this talk, I will provide empirical evidence for the Integration Hypothesis by drawing data from syntactic movement, word formation, and phonological reduplication. I will also show how the Integration Hypothesis overcomes a well-known gap between systems of animal communication and human language having to do with the Merge operation found in language.
