授業の概要・目的 How did the systematizers of the realist Mimamsa, Nyaya and Vaisesika schools of philosophy in the seventeenth century approach the inherited ancient philosophical texts of their own school? As newly developed navina- (Neo-) systems, what attitude did they show to the ancient authorities of their own system? To answer these questions we will look at the work of Annambhatta, whose work became so popular as to become a standard introductory manual. We will learn how to read the text with the aim of determining what issues motivated the author to adopt given strategies, and ultimately uncover what problems his systematization was trying to address.
到達目標 Students will learn how to read and study the epistemological sections of Manameyodaya of Narayana and theTarkasamgraha of Annambhatta. The aim is to enable students to understand the fundamental principles of sastric debate. This will serve as a basic introduction to the methodology of the new style of philosophy that came to dominate all fields of enquiry. Students will read passages explaining, in simple and clear style, some of the major tenets of the newly Mimamsa and Nyaya-Vaisesika systems and see how they relate to earlier ideas and later developments.
