授業の概要・目的 This class is aimed at students understanding the significance and issues of road transportation, public transportation, and logistics systems, outlining advanced (e.g., IT-based) management measures for the systems together with the related basic theories. Several practical exercises are also provided to the students to comprehend the effects and issues of the management measures.
到達目標 The goal is to encourage the students to obtain basic knowledge on the various issues in the field of Transportation and Logistics Management and the related countermeasures using emerging technologies and methodologies. The students are especially expected to acquire the ability to develop the plans to mitigate the related issues and to assess them by themselves.
授業計画と内容 In terms of management for road transportation system, this class outlines the basic idea of travel demand management (TDM) and congestion charging. Also, the applicability of intelligent transportation system (ITS) for effective management is discussed. On the management for logistics systems, the various issues caused by freight transportation are explained. This class also outlines the approaches to evaluate the related countermeasures, including intelligent dispatching, freight depot location, etc. On the management for public transportation systems, this class outlines the evolution and role of urban public transportation systems and services, focusing on those for bus and rail. Furthermore, this class also discusses the challenges and prospects, and shares the best practices of methods and management strategies. While the detailed schedule will be announced in the first lecture, the tentative contents of the class are as follows:

Logistics Systems:
Definition of logistics and supply chain, Supply chain network design, Freight transport network design, Cooperative freight transport systems, Freight vehicle routing and scheduling, Location of urban consolidation centres, etc.

Road Transportation Systems:
Present status and issues of road transportation systems, ITS for enhancing efficiency and safety in road transportation, Travel demand management (TDM), and Congestion charging.

Public Transportation Systems:
Overview of evolution and role of urban public transportation systems and services, especially focusing on bus and rail, Best practices on urban public transportation planning, network and service design, transit and land use, and the application of ITS technologies.
成績評価の方法・観点 The assessment for each student will be mainly made by considering two factors: 1) usual commitment to the class (participation in the class, assignment and quiz), and 2) reports (a few times). The weight for the reports will be around 80% in terms of grading.
履修要件 The students who take this class are required to master the basic mathematics, such as calculus, linear algebra and statistics.
授業外学習(予習・復習)等 At almost every class, the assignment and/or quiz related to the topics of the class is given to the students, and they are required to write the report for the assignment. The students are expected to have a chance to review the contents of the class through writing the report for the assignment.
