授業の概要・目的 The course is a survey on the history of Chinese painting from the Han dynasty (206 BCE- 220 CE) through the Song dynasty (960-1279). While tracing the general development of pictorial art in China, attention will be paid to major themes such as narrative painting, landscape painting, the relationship between poetry and painting, devotional (particularly buddhist) and secular pictorial representations, theories on the use of the brush and the connection between painting and calligraphy.
到達目標 -To gain a grounding in the study of the ancient Chinese painting and acquire art historical skills to identify major painted works of art of Ancient China.
-To enable a broader understanding of ancient China's artistic production process in relation to historical and cultural context of the period under examination.

成績評価の方法・観点 Attendance and participation are mandatory. Evaluation is based on class assignments (four times, 5 points each), final written exam (50 points), active participation in class (10 points) and participation to museum excursion (20 points). Students that are absent without justification for more than three times will not be admitted to the final written exam.
履修要件 No special prerequisites. A general knowledge on the history of China, although not compulsory, is recommended. Students might opt to combine this course with that of Oriental History I in the same semester.
授業外学習(予習・復習)等 Classes are taught with the frontal method. Art works are shown in powerpoint presentations. Students will be instructed, at the end of each class, on the relevant literature of the topic taught for reviewing the lesson. During the course there will be four assignments that students will have to prepare before the classes. Assignments consists in a small research (maximum 2 pages) related to one of the topics taught in class, that will be discussed or commented briefly in the class. There will a museum excursion equivalent to two classes. The final exam consists of a written test based on images recognition. Preparation to this exam is based on notes that students have taken during the classes and on the text books.
