Outline and Purpose of the Course There are diverse approaches to language research. The lectures in this course will focus on the different kinds of research methods used in linguistics research from ancient times to the present, with a focus on language history, Asian language research, and language and culture. We will discuss these topics oriented toward students with no prior knowledge of linguistics.
Course Goals Grasp an overview of linguistics research related to language history, Asian language studies, and language and society, and be able to understand the analysis methods and relationship to modern languages for each region.
Schedule and Contents We will give an outline of the following topics in the following order. This year, classes will be led by Adam Catt, Masami Otake, and Shuntaro Chida.
1. Studying Languages of the Ancient World: Panini (2 weeks)
2. The Birth of Modern "Linguistics": Indo-European Comparative Linguistics (3 weeks)
3. Traditional Language Studies in East Asia (2 weeks)
4. Japanese Lineage Theory (2 weeks)
5. Pidgin and Creole (2 weeks)
6. Language Policy and Intermediary Language Theory (1 week)
7. Linguistic Anthropology (2 weeks)
8. Summary and Exam
Evaluation Methods and Policy Assessment by written exam (75%) and class participation (25%).
Course Requirements None
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) No preparation is necessary, but it will be difficult to completely grasp the lecture content without browsing the materials distributed or the books mentioned in class, or without reviewing the material.
