Outline and Purpose of the Course In this course, we read closely Francesco Petrarca's "Rerum Vulgarium Fragmenta," following the first semester. The aim of the course is to deepen understanding of the Tuscan lyric tradition, by paying attention not only to the content of the individual works but also to their formal characteristics.
Course Goals (1) To acquire the ability to read and understand poetry accurately.
(2) To deepen understanding of the formal beauty of Italian verse.
(3) To experience the appeal of classical literature.
Schedule and Contents Week 1: Introduction

Weeks 2-14: Students read the text and check the rhythm and rhetoric of Petrarca’s lyrics. The course will emphasize accuracy in reading.

Week 15: Feedback
Evaluation Methods and Policy Students will be evaluated through quizzes conducted in each class.
Course Requirements An understanding of Italian grammar.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) The participants were required to adequately prepare for understanding the original text and to read it aloud before the class to familiarize themselves with the rhythms of Italian verse.
