Outline and Purpose of the Course Ethics has to do with the ethical subject, but its subject matter extends beyond the subject to include human society and the natural world. Moreover, although ethics does not stop at reflection on ethics but must open out into ethical action, reflection "--"; whether on the ethical subject or on the needs of the wider world "--"; is also part of ethical action.
These questions will be look at critically in the thinking of four thinkers from the same Kyoto philosophical tradition: Nishida Kitaro, Tanabe Hajime, Nishitani Keiji, and Ueda Shizuteru. The aim will be not only to look at the insights and oversights of each of these thinkers with regard to ethics, but also consider how their tradition may be given new life by addressing the questions they left open.
Course Goals ・Nishida's view of "self-awareness" as a grounding of the I-Thou relationship and his view of nature.
・Tanabe's view of the open and closed society as a basis for his understanding of self-awareness and his logic of the specific.
・Nishitani's idea of ethical ideals in relation to his idea of compassionate action in self-joyous samadhi.
・Ueda's reading of the "Oxherding Pictures" as a foundation for an ethics of compassionate action.
