Outline and Purpose of the Course In this course, we will read Hermann Hesse's novel "Demian"(1919). This masterpiece of Hesse in his middle age is a story of a spiritual development of Emil Sinclair, led by his mysterious friend Demian.
Course Goals ・Acquire reading comprehension skills for literary works written in German.
・Deepen understanding of the literary world of Hesse.
Schedule and Contents Week 1: Introduction
 Explanation of Hesse's life and works.
Weeks 2-14: Reading Texts
 Close reading of the first half of the work.
Week 15: Summary
 Summary of class content.
Evaluation Methods and Policy Students will be assessed based on class participation, including active participation in class and achievement of learning objectives.
Course Requirements Preferable to have intermediate-level skills in the German language.
Study outside of Class (preparation and review) The class will be run on a reading-in-turns format, so always come to class prepared.
