Outline and Purpose of the Course This course focuses on developing students’ reading comprehension of German materials on human geography. The text used in the class are chapters in book chapters and various documents such as newspapers, maps, and manuscripts. The aim of this course is to help students learn to use German materials for their own research.
Course Goals During the course, participants are expected to learn (1) to read and understand German texts; (2) skills for using research materials written in German, including books, statistics, newspaper, maps, and manuscripts.
Schedule and Contents Week 1: Introduction of text and the author Richthofen:
Richthofen, F. F. von. 1907. Ferdinand von Richthofen’'s Tagebücher aus China. Band 1. Mit 14 Lichtdrucktafeln, davon 13 nach Originalzeichnungen Richtofen's. Berlin: Dirtrich Reimer (Ernst Vohsen).

Week 2 - 29: Reading the texts, translating the contents into Japanese, and discussing the related documents and topics.
Week 30: Summary and feedback
Evaluation Methods and Policy The final grade will be evaluated according to performance (50 %) and the quality of translation (50%).
