Outline and Purpose of the Course Reading literature in French. In the first half of the year, students will read 19th-century pantomime scripts. By comparing scripts from the first half of the century with those from the second half of the century, students will deepen their understanding of the transformation of Pierrot’s image?“white Pierrot to black Pierrot”?in 19th-century France.
Course Goals To improve students' ability to read French and analyze literary works, which is necessary for future study.
Schedule and Contents Read Pierrot Onstage: An Anthology of 18th- and 19th-Century French Pantomime Scripts.

This anthology includes pantomime scripts by Nodier, Gautier, Flaubert, Huysmans, Paul, Maguerite, Laforgue, and Verlaine. In this course, students will read a number of these scripts. Graduate students will also present outlines of introductions to works exploring 19th-century pantomime. After reading each work, all students will present their own individual interpretation of the work.
