Outline and Purpose of the Course Plants accumulate some compounds in large amounts which are not directly necessary for its development and proliferation. Such compounds are called secondary metabolites. Generally, secondary metabolites are thought to contribute to the involvement with the plants and its environment. However, the functional roles of many secondary metabolites are not fully understood. In this lecture, we will discuss the function of secondary metabolites from the viewpoint of the relationship between plants and pathogenic microbes.
Course Goals The secondary metabolites of plants have been widely used as medicine, pesticide, or the lead of them, though its function towards plant itself has been still unclear. To develop your understanding of the function of secondary metabolism in the ecosystem, an emphasis is placed upon the biosynthesis, metabolism, and decomposition of secondary metabolite and the evolution of secondary metabolism.
Schedule and Contents 1. General introduction of secondary metabolism
2. Biological defense and Secondary metabolism of plants
3. The evolution of secondary metabolism – mainly discuss with Gramineae
4. Transgenic plants and secondary metabolism
5. The secondary metabolism of Fungai
6. Think of past and future of the secondary metabolism
Evaluation Methods and Policy Graded by participation and assignments. The detailed information is given by the education guideline of the year.
Course Requirements None
