授業の概要・目的 The common-sense view of consciousness is that it is something that the self either has or does: the self is the subject of experience, and being conscious is either a property of the self or an action performed by the self. This common-sense view is challenged by non-egological theories, theories that deny the existence of the self. Modern cognitive science denies that there is such a thing as a self existing separately from the body and the brain. Buddhists also deny the existence of a self that might serve as subject of experience, but at the same time they reject the physicalism of modern cognitive science. In these lectures we explore whether either non-egological approach can be made to work.

We begin by exploring just what it means to say that one is conscious. Do conscious mental states have a subject-act-object structure, or some other structure? Are they representational or iconic in nature, or is their function instead one that is exhausted in presenting an object? We then take up the question of how self-knowledge is possible. We presumably know that we are conscious—that we are not zombies. How is this possible? We investigate three different answers: the view that consciousness is reflexive in nature, the higher-order or introspective perception account, and the higher-order thought or theory-theory approach. Our aim in all this is to try to work out whether a non-egological approach to our existence as persons can be made compatible with a plausible account of consciousness.
到達目標 Students will learn various theories of consciousness, specifically the reflexivity or non-reflexivity of consciousness. They will tackle the question of how a non-egological approach to our existence (exemplified by Humean/Jamesian and Buddhist views) can be made to work.
